About the accommodations
Tsu san and Rie san spent 2 years renovating this 140-year-old former samurai residence with their own hands. After following the path along the river, the handsome mon-nagaya (gate-house) and storehouse first come into sight. The interior of the mon-nagaya has been remodeled into a relaxing room with a retro atmosphere that has a foreign vibe. In the main building, there is a cafe and accommodation spaces. Tsu san’s well-traveled foreign experiences and Rie san’s aesthetic sense can be seen throughout the mixed style atmosphere, where antiques from around the world are placed while retaining the atmosphere of an old folk house. What is more, next to the kitchen, there is a wood-burning stove that everyone longs for.
Bath and amenities
The bathroom, the wood ceiling and window left boldly as they were, has been renovated with tiles from India and a cabriole leg bathtub. Carefully arranged by Rie san, this bathroom is finished in an antique style. Since it is located on a small rise of land, with the window open you can take a bath while looking out onto the garden. Since it is a traveler’s inn, you should bring your own amenities with you. (Amenities are available at additional cost.) “Komori Onsen” and “Yunose Onsen,” which are within walking distance, are also recommended for those who want to enjoy a hot spring at their source.
About the meals
Guests are asked to order meals from the cafe menu, including a vegie curry with a spicy kick, obanzai dishes (traditional style of Japanese cuisine) with a mild taste, and tarte cake using chemical-free fruits. You can also order hand-ground organic coffee Tsu san brews with an iron kettle. In the morning, enjoy tamago kake gohan (raw egg over rice) using sweet rice polished by waterwheel, and local specialty eggs laid by chickens that are provided with natural water. At night, enjoy the locally brewed flavorful sake recommended by Tsu san.
Example activities
【Theater room】
Surprisingly, there is a theater room custom-built and finished by Tsu san’s own hands in the storehouse next to the main building. The theater was designed to take advantage of the features of the storehouse that cuts off all outside light and sound, and it is not an exaggeration to say that the acousmato or surround-sound is just like a cinema. Here, you can bring and watch your favorite movies, so why not come with your friends and family? Enjoy spending a special time in this theater room exclusive to “Komori no Tsukinoshita.”
【Coffee-brewing experience】
You can experience brewing organic coffee with an iron kettle. Learn how to brew tasty coffee, while chatting with friendly owner Tsu san.
【Wood chopping experience】
When it is cool outdoors, you can also experience wood chopping. Chopped firewood is dried for the winter months and used as a fuel for the wood-burning stove in the main building. This experience is also recommended for women since swinging a small axe requires less strength than you think and serves to relieve stress.
【Migration experience talks in the relaxing room】
Both Tsu san and Rie san are migrators to Kibichuo Town. Tsu san used to be a backpacker who traveled around the world. Why not relax and forget about time in this space accompanied by music and talk about his rich traveling experiences and how to have fun and live in Kibichuo Town?
